[Lab 5] Web Mapping

With ArcGIS, we mapped the journey of a tomb figure of a court lady all the way to Carleton College.

In my first trial of making the map, I made a little mistake that in the Location column of our template, I just copied and pasted without edition the Place of Origin column in the provenance list(which is Chinese, Sichuan Province, Tang Dynasty, with the dynasty). Therefore, ArcGIS was unable to recognize this position and I spent a lot of time trying to manually add a point as the origin location. Later I fixed it by just modifying the Place of Origin column to Sichuan Province, China.

One decision I made during mapping making was that since the map is duplicates of world map, I chose a route from Hong Kong to the east through Pacific Ocean for importation because California is on the west coast and therefore it made a lot more sense than the other route to the west through Atlantic Ocean.

With such maps, digital humanists can better trace the origin of an item. Also, it helps to show a clearer and more intuitive display to the public.
