Data: We got data for this map from the Alumni Directory. We got data pertaining to Computer Science and English majors from 2000-2023, so we had to do some cleaning to get the data narrowed down to only English majors. To do this, I simply filtered the data based on the “Major” column containing English. I made sure that it contained English rather than only having English as the major as we were interested in the double majors as well. Also, I used the stringr package to eliminate any blank/white space before and after the entries in case it would affect the mapping process in ArcGIS.
Tool or Technique: To make this map, Ty worked with ArcGIS
Purpose: This data visualization serves more of an exploratory purpose. We want to use this map to be able to explore the patterns of where alumni traveled after graduation, and this serves as a visual tool to do that.
Clarity: In order to improve clarity, we changed the points of the map to more easily reflect data density. Areas with larger amounts of alumni will be darker and more saturated while areas with less alumni will be significantly smaller.
