FINAL PROJECT: Carletonian Corpus

Julia Bartlett, Maddy Brown, Becca Helmstetter, Angie Pius

We’re excited to present our final project site! Our project, Carletonian Corpus, is an investigation of trends in Carleton student discourse through corpus analysis and visualization of thematic trends occurring on front pages of our newspaper, the Carletonian, from 1883-2019. Although we couldn’t include every term that trended in the paper over the years, we have curated a few themes of interest and compared them with Google Ngram viewer data in an effort to examine Carleton conversations against the backdrop of ‘real world’ discourse. We also set out to present an overview of graphic and stylistic changes that the Carletonian has undergone across its history; these are viewable on the home page and “Gallery” tabs of our site.

We hope that this project and/or the methods used in its creation will be useful to the Carleton community and all of those interested in DH’s potential to shed light upon campus culture!
