ArcGIS Mapping – Lab Post

My group and I made this map using ArcGIS of just the locations that our grain storehouse had traveled to get to Carleton. I found this process to be relatively intuitive and actually a lot more interesting than I thought. ArcGIS has a lot of easy to use features that really allow you to create a layout that you would like.

I also can see a lot of the utility of having a website like this. I think it works great on both larger and smaller scale projects. For example, making this project which goes across continents and creating the path that it took was not too difficult and I think is easy to understand the goal of it. Or if I wanted to make a layout of main streets that have parks nearby, I could also do that to a high level using the software. Overall, I definitely think ArcGIS is an important tool and has a lot of utility to it.

  1. This is a really great job. I like that you chose to label the points on the map with each place, it adds accuracy to the points, rather than vague ideas about where each destination is. I wonder if there’s a way to incorporate time into the map, such as through arrows. Really cool map and really nice work!

  2. I really liked your work, especially the part where you put a circle around each location, which makes the path very clear to read. Besides, I’m just wondering if ArcGIS have limitations, for example it might not have the complex symbols for a garden or restaurant in the default setting.

  3. I appreciate how easy your map is to read: the labels stand out against the background of the map, the circles indicate stops, and the line tracks the order. The popups are also quite detailed. How did you create a table of keys and values?
