Network Analysis [Game of Thrones]

Network Graph Showcasing Game of Thrones Volume 1 Connections
Network Graph Showcasing Game of Thrones Volume 1 Connections

While I know nothing about Game of Thrones, I have always wanted to learn about it. I would watch the show, but I wonder if I would have time with the workload from classes. While the website has many graphs showcasing networks from different seasons of the series and different volumes of the novels, I decided to analyze Volume 1 of the novels to see if I could gain some insight into the Game of Thrones realm. I chose to analyze this network graph because of its overall look. It’s a very “full” graph with many connections that I’m sure those who have watched the show or read the books would recognize or appreciate. This specific network can be found by using this link. The other networks’ central hub can be found using this link.

What (or who) are the nodes and what are the edges?

187 nodes showcase the characters’ names in the book, and 684 weighted edges showcase 7,366 interactions. As shown in the network graph above, there is a difference in size for both nodes and edges. The sizes of the nodes are based on PageRank centrality, while the edge thickness is related to the edge weight.

How are the relationships characterized and categorized?

The edges connecting the nodes show that the two nodes/characters have interacted in one way or another. The more two characters interact, the thicker the edges are. There is a stronger relationship between the two nodes with thicker edges. The relationships could be good, bad, neutral, or whatever; the network does specify the exact type of relationships.

Another relationship the Network shows is a community relationship. A total of 6 communities are seen, which can be identified by the different colors used for the nodes. Nodes of the same color belong to the same community. The six communities shown are the Night’s Watch (Purple), Riverlands (Orange), Dothraki (Dark Green), King’s Landing (Blue), Royal Children (Light Green), and Winterfell (Pink). There are also two small communities containing three nodes each. The first is the Night’s Watchmen (Yellow), located towards the top of the graph by the Night’s Watch community. The second is the three sons from the bounty of progeny of Walder Frey (Light Blue), located towards the right by the Riverlands community.

  1. I like how you described all of the details and made this data very explainable. As someone who is pretty familar with A Game of Thrones, the first book in A Song of Ice and Fire, I think that you did a good job of explaining all of the different communities, and how they interact with one another.
