Tutorial Assignment

My topic that I want to discuss is changing file types for data. I was not aware how to do this until this class, and now I have learned its utility, and it has enabled me to more easily maniuplate data in the ways that I want. This process is useful because generally, DH applications are only usable for certain file types, and this enables the user to do more things with their data. I will provide an example by recreating the process I used with my files for my midterm. This will only work with certain types of files, such as xml and html, but I will show how to alter them.

  1. The first thing that you want to do is download the file, in order to manipulate its contents.

2. Next, you will want to open a note or notepad and paste the contents of your file, an xml file in this case. You can also edit the file in the notepad if you want to remove or add anything.

3. Now that you have the contents of the file in the notepad, you can save the file in order to change what kind of file it is.

4. Once you are here, you are able to change the name of the file, and the file type, by typing into the file box something like this: name.html

5. After clicking Save, you now have an html file that you can use for other DH applications. You can click on the html file that is now saved on your computer and open it onto your browser!

And there you, that’s how you turn an xml file into an html file. Htmldog is a great website to learn how to use html, so that has further information on to manipulate the file once you have it.

  1. This tutorial was really easy for me to follow, and I really appreciate the images you included. This is something I really struggled with throughout the course, so I am glad I will be able to look back at this tutorial for future times I try to use digital practices. It always seemed like such a daunting process, but the way you simplify it helps me understand this in a more manageable way!

  2. File conversion is often overcomplicated when dealing with applications that require very specific inputs, which seems to be a common occurrence with DGAH process. This tutorial is concise, not overly-wordy, and takes the path of least resistance. Well done!
