Project Charter: Carletonian Corpus

Shared Values

  • We place value in showing up and staying in touch.
  • We want to be receptive to ideas from everyone
  • Sticking to a project timeline to stay on top of tasks will benefit us in the long run.

Shared Expectations

  • We will be responsive to one another.
    • We’ll do our best to respond to texts day-of, and ideally within a few hours depending on their urgency.
  • We’ll have grace for one another as the difficult end of term approaches.
  • We’ll meet regularly.
    • Class time
    • Extra weekly meeting Fridays 3:30-4:30pm

Communication

  • We have a groupchat through WhatsApp that works for our day-to-day communication.
  • For documents and larger pieces of information, we have a shared Google Drive folder.
    • At the moment, we’re working out of a “planning” doc in that folder.

How will we solve disagreements?

  • Most disagreements can be resolved through direct, honest communication.
  • Assuming that we all have the best intentions will help keep tensions low.
  • If one of us has a significant difference of opinion, we will talk through available options.
  • We are open to compromise.

Division of responsibilities

  • Datamaster: Julia
  • Webmaster: Angie
  • Scribe: Becca
  • Data Analyst: Maddy

Personal Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Becca:
      • Strengths:
        • I have some experience with looking at textual analysis data and drawing larger conclusions — I can do broad takeaways
        • I am a Reader of the Carletonian
        • I’m comfortable writing up our findings and processes
        • I’m organized and can play a slightly larger administrative / documenting role to help ease the load off of the people who are doing more data-heavy work
        • I’ve used the archives before and I love sorting through print records and doing ‘analog’ research, if we need to do that
      • Weaknesses:
        • I don’t think I have a good handle on data cleaning with regular expressions
        • I get turned around easily when it comes to thinking through the details of the data transformations we’ll have to do
        • I am horrendously under the gun with my other projects this term, and it looks like all three will be due around the same time
    • Julia:
      • Strengths
        • I have patience with problem solving and annoying data problems, decent with openrefine and sheets
        • Good idea of the bigger picture we’re trying to achieve in this project, excited about it
      • Weaknesses
        •  Tend to have an out of sight, out of mind mindset when it comes to deadlines, I need to make smaller deadlines to get work done
        • I don’t like asking for help lol
    • Angie:
      • Weaknesses:
        • Too many ideas
        • Overcommitted in extracurricular activities
        • Doesn’t really understand OpenRefine
      • Strengths:
        • Good at being pragmatic
        • Enjoys the coding aspect of website building
        • Takes pleasure in delving into the nitty-gritty minutia of things
    • Maddy:
      • Weaknesses:
        • Takes a while to familiarize self with new tools/technologies
        • Can be too much of a detail-oriented perfectionist
        • Sometimes my priorities can be off and I lose sight of the bigger picture in a project
      • Strengths:
        • Like to finish projects thoroughly and do quality work
        • I like organizing information which I think can translate to cleaning data and making a story out of it
        • Tedious or mind numbing data work doesn’t bother me
