Web Mapping Lab Reflection

I think web mapping is a very interesting process that shows a lot of promise for making maps more accessible over long periods of time. My group’s map of the journey of the tomb figure of a horse, which can be found below, looks very simple but was a bit confusing to create.

In particular, I think the ArcGIS Online platform had far too many buttons scattered across the interface with not enough organization. I may be exaggerating a bit but it felt like I had to search for simple features like the “Save” button. While it was frustrating at times, I am satisfied with the end result. I really like the interactive aspect of the map in which you can click on any of the points to see a pop-up of the horse object and a link to the museum collection. Overall, I think that ArcGIS Online has a lot of potential to make maps that show the movement of something over time easier to look at and understand but the interface could use some cleaning up by developers.

  1. You guys’ project ended up looking a lot like my group’s final project, which I suspect is going to be the trend with many a final product in this lab. Moreover, I fully agree with your observations on how visually noisy the interface is, learning GIS feels, to me, like trying to pilot a spaceship at times. Great work!
