Data Visualization

While using data on baby names from 2001- 2010. I created a multi-set bar chart showing the popularity of each name throughout the years using RAWGraphs.

The data provided gave us a list of the baby names and a count for each name as well as the sex of the baby. I created a multi-set bar chart of the total count of a given name for multiple years. In this setup, the years are the sets(x-axis), the counts are the size(y-axis), and the names are the series. This gives an insight into how common a particular name was across different years.

One change I made was sorting the series by the total value of the counts of each name. This arranges series in order from least to most common names. This makes the charts easier to understand.

Reflecting on Lin’s lecture, one main takeaway was in Digital Humanities you can change how you present the data to help your viewer understand it better. This is why I arranged the names in order, from least to most common. Before making this change, the graphs seemed very cluttered and could be very confusing. This minor adjustment
