Digital Humanities as a discipline does continue to surprise me with all of its practical applications. I have taken Archeological Methods and have used ArcGIS, and it was incredibly helpful in compiling data about where we had collected different artifacts. It didn’t even occur to me that this technology would have other applications. I’m really interested in how geomapping is used in urban planning and what kind of data is most helpful for this. I also tried georeferencing for the first time, and I thought that was quite interesting and definitely has a lot of applications. It changed the way I thought about how different types of data can be compiled as a way of telling an entirely different story. My specific georeferencing project wasn’t that interesting to me, because I didn’t really understand what I was doing, but there are a lot of applications to georeferencing that are really intriguing to me. I think if I were to do my project again, I would try to connect two completely different types of data. The religion and cultures of indigenous peoples are fascinating to me, and I think it would be quite cool to incorporate that into my project somehow by using maps to show the culture and religion of indigenous people in North America. One aspect of archeology that is discussed quite often is how inaccessible the discipline is to the majority of people, and I think georeferencing could really be utilized as a way to display global trends in a way that is easy for people to understand and accessible.
