Parker Johnson’s Midterm Assignment

Here is a link to my midterm project. This project is a bar chart race showing the top 10 number of artworks each artist has within the Tate Gallery’s collection from the 1980’s.

  1. I think your choice to represent art on a broader scale with a bar chart race is really interesting, and shares information we wouldn’t otherwise get to see. I think this project represents one of the benefits of digital humanities work. I also think it was cool for me to read through your process and how you switched back and forth between R and OpenRefine. I feel like I learned a lot by reading through your midterm.

  2. This was great. I didn’t know that flourish allows you to create bar chart races, I will have to check that out soon. I think they are a great option for showing how something changes over time and they are very interesting to watch and easy to understand. This was interesting to see the types of data cleaning you needed to do for the visualization to work.

  3. Hey Parker, I appreciate the extra work you put in to make your website look nice! Also your midterm is really well organized which makes it really easy to read and understand. The Flourish bar chart race is really impressive. I agree that the movement of the chart is way more fun than a static graph or screenshot. I think it was a great choice to use as opposed to several static bar charts.

  4. The bar chart is very mesmerizing to look at if I’m being honest! It’s really cool to see how the different artists change over time visually. I know that the timeline can be stopped at any point, but I am curious to know if there is any way in Flourish to alter the speed of the timeline? There were some points in the animation where I would try to keep track of one particular artist, but then got lost and had to track that person again. Alternatively, are there ways to have each bar be a different color, so it might be easier for the viewer to quickly associate a color with a particular artist of interest?

  5. Your website is amazing! I need to learn from you. The bar chart race is amazing as well. It really allows viewers to understand Tate gallery’s art collection data over time. It helped me gain valuable insights into the productivity and output of individual artists over time, and highlights the potential for digital approaches to revolutionize the study of the arts. I found that your project really helped me see the importance for digital humanities for your topic. Thank you for sharing!
