Immediately I became very interested in Fusion 360. I remember using similar modeling software in elementary school but I have not used anything like it since then. We played around mostly in Unity. At first I knew most of the basics although I quickly realized that I did not know as much as I thought. When instructed to create a dice I quickly put together a 3D box. Although after looking at the example dice, I realized I had really only made a box and not a dice. My teacher instructed me to not worry and to try to focus on making an object for my homework/lab. I stayed after class to build a water bottle by just playing around with the different things possible in Fusion 360. I made the material metallic and placed water into the object as well. Still, I thought that I could do a much better job. I felt as though I had trouble building off the initial object I placed in the environment so I decided to pivot my technique. I decided to try and make something that would be harder to build and required using tools that did not appear immediately easy. I made a glass bottle using a tool called revolve. I got this idea from a youtube video that showed how to make a bottle using revolve. I find youtube videos as a very helpful medium for learning new things.

To start my second object I first downloaded a picture of a glass bottle onto my computer and then I used my pointer tool to outline the highest points(the ones that jut out the most). I did this by using the sketching ability in Fusion 360. This was done by drawing over the object that I used as a canvas. Then I used a curvy connecting tool to connect all these points. I then used the revolve tool to hollow out my object and bring it to life. I was able to customize the material as well as dictate the thickness of the bottle. Looking back there was a critical error in my bottle. My bottle had a rounded bottle. While I could have fixed it by using the flatten tool I decided to leave it because I thought it looked cooler that way. Sometimes mistakes turn out to be successes.

Looking back I wish I had used my resources sooner and watched some tutorial videos. Although I do think that playing around without a tutorial video gave me some appreciation for the fact that I do not have to learn it on my own and I have a class to help me learn the material. I had a lot of fun with the assignment in all and look forward to using Fusion 360 again.

  1. I found it really helpful to read your section about how you used the revolve tool. The sketch tool was something I didn’t know about, but I think that’ll come in very handy to be able to trace over specific objects the way you described. I think I might try some of these techniques on my projects moving forward!

  2. Thank you for sharing about the revolve tool. I was trying to also create a water bottle at first, but I couldn’t quite figure out how to create the bottle’s shape and keep it hollow. I also realize that I need to utilize youtube more for this class. Are there particular channels you used for this project or any that popped up during your search?
