In this lab, we utilized the ArcGIS platform to create a map that depicts the journey of a previously 3D modeled object. Although the final product was impressive, the process of creating the map was a bit challenging. The object had an unknown importation location, and we struggled with adding a labeled point to the map, we did not include it.

Web mapping holds immense potential for digital humanities projects as it offers a unique way of visualizing locations and telling stories. Being able to see the exact location of an event on a map, along with additional information that is accessible with a click, makes the story more engaging and easier to understand compared to other methods. The ArcGIS platform is a great host for interactive maps and has powerful sharing tools. However, we found the user interface to be a bit clunky and confusing at times, particularly in the classic view of the platform. Adding elements to the map, such as labels, proved to be a challenge, and we encountered one bug where they could not complete a line layer.

Despite these challenges, we believe that the platform is still very beneficial for creating sophisticated maps and has great potential in the digital humanities field. The experience of putting their web mapping knowledge to use with an object they had previously studied was very interesting. The spreadsheet provided the origins and path of the object, but seeing the locations connected on a world map made us realize just how far the object had traveled to get to its current location. It is one thing to read locations from a list, but seeing them connected on a map is entirely different and provides a deeper understanding of the story.

  1. I agree with you that ArcGIS was a little unwieldy on first use, and my group also had to make some sacrifices in order to get the project done, which was a little disappointing given the immense potential that even our relatively small project had. Like you said, the ability to be able to actually see where something comes from is so much more compelling than reading it off of a webpage.

  2. I also found out that ArcGIS has a very high skill ceiling, but I believe the most basic functions should be fairly simple to use. I found it very interesting messing around with the various ways one can represent data through it, which really helped me visualizing my group’s object. I also faced trouble with limited known locations, since my object according to the map has travelled straight through the sea and I’m not sure if I can believe that.
